FERTEX Spring Tips

Choosing the right lawn care program is the best way to get results. Act now, to provide your lawn with the foundation it needs for a lush, green cover.

As the snow FINALLY is starting to melt and the grass comes out of dormancy it should be checked for signs of damages such as dead or bare spots, thin areas etc.

Spring Clean up: Sets the tone for the whole year. It is very important to get a complete clean up, flower and shrubs beds, pruning back perennials that were not cut back in the fall, light raking of the whole lawn area, removing dead grass and any other debris (branches) and a quick blowing to remove leaves are necessary for a good beginning of the season. Damaged areas by the plow should be re-seeded or sodded as necessary. FERTEX will take care of the treatments when is time to feed the long rested lawn and prevent crabgrass from germinating. Timing is very important for a complete control of crabgrass. Please contact your landscape company to take care of the clean up and any other suggestion about your yard needed to begin this season as soon as weather opens up.

IF YOU STILL DON’T HAVE A LAWN CARE COMPANY, CONTACT FERTEX FOR MORE DETAILS.

Common problems at this time of the season:

  • Gray Snow Mold: it causes patches that are light brown, gray or straw colored and that measure less than 10 inches in diameter. The patches can increase to several feet and coalesce. Usually is most severe when snow cover last more than 90 days.

  • Pink Snow Mold: the patches, which can coalesce, are pale pink around the edges. The control of either lawn disease may require a combination of methods.
For severe cases, chemical, cultural and biological controls is required. In less severe cases, a light raking of the affected areas may be enough, which will allow the matted area to loosen the grass and new plants to grow. Be sure that the raking is done lightly, as the ground is usually very wet and the existent grass easily raked up.
FERTEX offers FREE educational advice to your current landscape company for better results and avoid additional cost to repair affected areas.

  • Moss: usually a signal that growing conditions are not appropriate for your grass. Shade is not the only reason moss is taking over part of your lawn. Drainage, to much shade, not enough air circulation, soil condition etc. can be a reason for moss growing..
